‘Django Unchained’s Jamie Foxx in Talks to Play Mike Tyson

Former heavy weight world champion Mike Tyson has reported that not only will Jamie Foxx portray him in an upcoming biopic, but also that Martin Scorsese is somehow involved.

“Me and Jamie Foxx are in discussion, and we gonna do it,” Mike Tyson said to the Daily Mirror. “Within a year to eighteen months, we’re going to do the Mike Tyson story and he’s going to portray me.” The biopic will show Tyson at different stages in his life. Tyson peaked at age twenty, making him the youngest heavyweight champion of the world. In 1992 he was convicted of rape and in 2003 he declared bankruptcy, despite high career earnings. With Foxx on board, the film sounds promising to say the least.

Although the forty-six year old Foxx may be a brilliant character actor, he may not be the best fit for the role given his age (and mass). Reportedly, the filmmakers will use the same CGI technology as The Curious Case of Benjamin Button to transform the actor. They may be able to turn back the clock, but Foxx should start hitting the bags. Reportedly, the Oscar winning actor has already asked Tyson to help him train for the role.

Although the boxer is nearly thirty years past his glory days, he stays busy working on different film productions. He has been the subject of several documentaries, performed his own one-man show and he now stars as a Scooby Doo-like character in an animated series for Adult Swim. And who could forget his role as himself in The Hangover with his pet tiger? I wonder if we will see the tiger in the biopic.

No title or release date is in sight, but you can next see Foxx in the upcoming reboot of Annie when it hits theaters in December.

Oh and if you doubt Foxx’s ability to portray a boxer believably, you’re wrong. Check out this clip of Foxx as Carl “The Tooth” Williams from In Living Color back in the early 1990s. In it, Williams challenges Tyson to a match. Jim Carrey also appears.
