126284438_linklater_405930c1-webTexas-born director Richard Linklater has left the remake of The Incredible Mr. Limpet. Production on the film was expected to start later this fall. The film has been rumored for some time to shoot as least in part in Louisiana.

The 1964 adaption of The Incredible Mr. Limpet followed a man who turns into a fish and then helps the Navy destroy German U-Boats during World War II. The new film reimagines Limpet as a beach bum who protects the ocean from big business.

Limpet has been in active development with Linklater attached as director since 2011. Also attached is an all star cast that includes The Hangover‘s Zach Galifianakis, Jon Hamm, Danny McBride, Sarah Silverman, Kevin Hart, Josh Gad and comedy duo Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele of Comedy Central’s Key & Peele. Galifiakanis is set to star as the titular Larry Limpet, the role previously inhabited by Don Knots. Akiva Goldsman and Bill Gerber are producing.

Linklater is riding a wave of positive reviews for his new film Boyhood, which he shot in pieces over twelve years, using the same actors as they actually age in real life. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Linklater wants to focus on That’s What I’m Talking About, a film set on a college campus that’s being seen as a spiritual successor to Dazed & Confused. In addition to focusing on other projects, THR points out that there’s a good likelihood that Linklater would also have to dedicate time to awards season at the same time Limpet is expected to shoot.
