William Joyce

William Joyce is among Variety’s Animation Elite of 2012 for his work as executive producer in Rise of the Guardians. The Louisiana native has had a long career in the animation world with his Shreveport studio Moonbot. The Variety list recognizes artists and executives who advanced the field of animation in 2012.

Joyce received more honors this year, including an Academy Award for the animated short “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore,” 11 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list for the book that inspired the short and a Webby award for the iOS app, The Numberlys. Rise of the Guardians received 10 Annie Award nominations for Best Animated Feature, Animated Effects, Character Animation, Music, Production Design, Storyboarding, Voice Acting and Editorial. Hosted by ASIFA-Hollywood, the Annie Awards recognizes the year’s best animated productions and outstanding individual achievements in the field of animation.

Shreveport author William Joyce’s books adapted to film

What do the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, the Sandman and the Tooth Fairy do on their down time?  Save the hopes and dreams of children everywhere, obviously!  The DreamWorks Animation film Rise of the Guardians brings these legendary characters to the big screen as they battle the evil spirit, Pitch, in this classic struggle of good and evil.  Based on William Joyce’s The Guardians of Childhood series, the film includes talent from such notables as Hugh Jackman, Alec Baldwin, Isla Fisher, Chris Pine and Tom Kenny.  Joyce, a Shreveport resident, is an acclaimed children’s author whose work has been featured in print, television and film.

Rise of the Guardians opens in theaters on November 21.

Shreveport animator invited to join the Academy

The Academy has invited 176 new members to join the elite group. The easiest way to be invited to join the Academy is to win an Oscar but if someone is nominated at the awards they are also likely to join the ranks of their peers. Among those to join this year, 47 of them were either nominated or won an Oscar at the 84th Academy Awards. Eight of the newest inductees are Berenice Bejo, Demian Bichir, Jessica Chastain, Jonah Hill, Melissa McCarthy, Janet McTeer and Oscar winners Jean Dujardin (Best Actor – The Artist) and Octavia Spencer (Best Supporting Actress – The Help).

William Joyce, a Shreveport born and raised filmmaker, was also invited to join the Academy’s roster after winning the award for best animated short this year for The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore.

Teaser trailer for ‘Rise of the Guardians’

The trailer for Peter Ramsey’s animated film Rise of the Guardians has just arrived. The 3D film is an adaptation of Shreveport native William Joyce’s novel, Guardians of Childhood. Joyce, along with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire, is a writer on the adventure film. Joyce recently won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore. 

Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman, Chris Pine, Isla Fisher and Jude Law lend their voices to the fantasy film, which is set to be released on Thanksgiving Day. The story follows beloved mythical characters Santa Claus (Baldwin), the Easter Bunny (Jackman), the Tooth Fairy (Fisher), and Jack Frost (Pine) as they band together to protect the imagination of children everywhere from a dark spirit known as Pitch (Law).
