The Cullens and La Push werewolves have reached a truce, the weather is perfect and the long-awaited wedding day for Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) has arrived. The happy couple jets off on their honeymoon—then everything begins falling to ruin.
Bella’s days as a human are dwindling down, but an unexpected pregnancy accelerates the process, much to Edward’s dismay. The brooding vampire agreed in Eclipse to turn her, but only after she experiences life as a human teenager and the joys of marriage without a taste for blood. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, based on the novel by Stephenie Meyer, has been stretched out into two films to include all of the action and drama from the final installment of the bloodsucking romantic series.
The Twilight Saga stars Pattinson, Stewart, Taylor Lautner, Jackson Rathbone, Ashley Greene, Nikki Reed, Kellan Lutz, Peter Facinelli and Elizabeth Reaser. In 2005, Twilight was an instant best-seller and its popularity only escalated in subsequent years, skyrocketing in 2008 with the release of its film adaptation. The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009) and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010) both broke box office records for the biggest midnight release, only to be dethroned by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 in July. With the last of the Harry Potter movies out of the way and two more films lined up, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn has the potential to be the juggernaut of November 2011 and 2012.
Part one of Breaking Dawn deals with the events leading up to Bella giving birth to half-vampire/half-human, Renesmee (Mackenzie Foy). The pregnancy voids the arrangement made between the werewolves and vegetarian vampire, and once again, Bella’s life is in jeopardy as the wolves plan to kill her and the baby, forcing Jacob (Lautner) to choose between his pack and his love for Bella. To make things worse, the baby is literally crushing her from the inside out. The graphic descriptions of childbirth described in the novel had fans wondering if it would maintain its PG-13 rating for the silver screen, but rumor has it that the scenes will be shown from Bella’s dazed perspective so minimal eye-shielding will be required for those freaked out.
The second Breaking Dawn film focuses more on Bella’s adjustment to life as a vampire and the scandal of Renesmee Cullen. A vampire-human hybrid is thought unheard of and the Volturi now have a new reason to come after the Cullens. Covens from around the world band together to join the peaceful group in protecting the “newborn” vampire and the rapidly aging Renesmee,
who will be portrayed by three other young actresses in addition to Foy: Rachel St. Gelais (The Blind Side), Sierra Pitkin (Juno) and newcomer Christie Burke.
On November 3, Pattinson, Stewart and Lautner made a lasting mark on the Hollywood Walk of Fame by having their hand and footprints cemented outside of Grauman’s Chinese Theater.
Filmed in Baton Rouge, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn arrives in theaters November 18.
