TRAILER: Ryan Reynolds in ‘The Captive’

by Christine Samarchi on July 14, 2014

This isn’t Exotica, but you can only expect some complicated themes from Atom Egoyan in his latest film, The Captive. What starts as a typical child abduction thriller takes curious and unusual turns into a deeper mystery with multiple suspects.

Ryan Reynolds stars as the distraught father, the first blamed for his daughter’s disappearance. However, when new evidence appears, including a hidden camera in the father’s house, the plot thickens like cold soup.

Egoyan uses multiple timelines, spanning eight years, to uncover the evidence behind this abduction case. The investigators, played by Rosario Dawson and Scott Speedman, collide with several peculiar characters and suspects, including Kevin Durand, Bruce Greenwood and Mireille Enos, a frantic wife and mother.

The Oscar-nominated director frequently makes use of sexuality and The Captive looks like no exception. The Captive premiered as an official selection at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and is hoping for a fall domestic release.
