‘Vampire Diaries’ star Ian Somerhalder aims to evoke environmental change

Louisiana native Ian Somerhalder’s passion for environmental conservation is contagious.  His latest ambition intends to encourage one of the most enthusiastic and powerful groups of people on the planet: the world’s youth.  In fact, Somerhalder founded the Ian Somerhalder Foundation (ISF) which seeks to do just that, utilizing the strength and extent of social media.  The ISF “aims to empower, educate and collaborate with people and projects to positively impact the planet and its creatures.”  Somerhalder began his mission when he witnessed the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico just a few years ago.  This tragedy greatly affected the Vampire Diaries star as he helplessly observed the destruction.  He describes his experience as watching “the most beautiful body of water in the world, literally my backyard, be completely destroyed, possibly forever. It can never happen again.”

The ISF held a fundraiser for its new campaign, “Let’s Get Dirty,” in Los Angeles this past weekend.  The party aimed to introduce a new generation to the environmental issues of  today and “propel our world into a better, kinder and greener future.”
