VIDEO: ‘I Saw The Light’ Star Tom Hiddleston Debuts His Hank Williams Live at Wheatland Music Festival

by Michelle Preau on September 10, 2014

Tom Hiddleston, best known as Loki in Thor and Avengers, is set to play country music legend Hank Williams in the upcoming film I Saw the Light. And he is wasting no time getting into character.

Hiddleston made a surprise appearance at the Wheatland Music Festival in Michigan as he performed a few of Hank Williams’ best-known songs alongside his country-music coach Rodney Crowell. The surprise performance revealed that the English actor was quite a good singer with a very believable country twang.

Even with his great voice, there has been some controversy with country fans, given that Hiddleston is a British man playing an American icon from Alabama. Hank Williams III even agreed that an authentic southern actor should’ve played his grandfather. Nonetheless, Hiddleston has taken on this role wholeheartedly as he practices vocal and guitar daily with Crowell.

The film will follow the country singer’s rise to stardom from his first marriage in 1944 to his Grand Ole Opry debut in 1949. Sadly, the country icon passed away in 1953 at 29 due to heart failure from drug and alcohol use.

I Saw the Light begins shooting in Shreveport in October and is slated for release in 2015.Tom-Hiddleston_reuters_1200-web

Hmm.I am from Alabama, and the primary researcher on Hank Williams early life, and his mentor, an African American man, Rufus “Teetot” Payne. According to Hank Williams, Mr. Payne was Hank’s only musical influence. The fact that the movie that is about Hank Williams, and will be leaving out his mentoring for ten years by an African American musician from New Orleans, tells me it is another crap fest of bullshit and lies. Well, what else are we going to get? Bring back George Hamilton?

Interesting. Have you read the script? Is Teetot definitely not in it?
